A band composed of 5 sisters, mentored by their musically talented father, is a rarity. Aptly named, Daughters 5 comes from humble beginnings from the town of Binan, Laguna and Tarlac province. In April 1996, Juanito Villanueva Jr. or Jun, father to the Villanueva sisters, taught his daughters to sing and play different musical instruments - Jury learned to play the piano, April and Apple studied the guitar, and Queency learned to play the drums. Twinkle the youngest was still too young to play then. Jun teamed up with his four daughters and formed the “Assets Band.” Two weeks later they were invited to play in town fiestas and provincial events.
In March 2002, Twinkle, the youngest, took up short lessons in violin at the University of Santo Tomas and soon after joined her siblings. They started to perform professionally in local gigs around Metro Manila and did out-of-town shows for corporate events and politicians. The band’s name was later changed to “The Daughters Band.”
The Daughters Band performed in Korea and Indonesia and was discovered by foreign entertainment scouts such as the US-based producer, John Probandt, who financed their own music recording that was digitally mastered in Nashville, USA. Just this year, Mr. Tony Butala of the famous “The Lettermen” took notice of the Daughters Band while he was in Manila and initiated an email exchange for possible future performances and projects.
Last August 2010, the Villanueva Sisters learned of a band in the United States named “The Daughters” which has been recording music since 2002. This prompted them to rename their band to ”Daughters 5.” A highly versatile and multi-talented group, their repertoire includes songs from the Beatles, Spice Girls, the Corrs, Queen, Carpenters, Earth Wind & Fire, Santana, Destiny’s Child and many others.
